Koocanusa Lake / Koocanusa Reservior
It all started back in the day when the snow was big, and the spring runoff from the Kootenai River river caused flooding in Montana, Idaho and British Columbia the US and Canada decided to work together to solve the problem. The Libby Dam was a joint project between the United States and Canada in an effort to provide flood protection and generate Hydroeletric power. Lake Koocanusa also known as the Koocanusa Reservoir is a Man Made Lake created in the 1972 when the Libby Dam was completed. Unfortunately we lost a very spectacular and scenic leg of the Kootenai River along with the old town of Rexford which now remains buried beneath the waters of Koocanusa . On a Lighter note, today we enjoy a variety of water sports and recreation activities including Boating, Sking, Wake Boarding, Fishing, Lakeshore Camping and Picnicking.
. Sport fish include rainbow trout, west slope cutthroat, brook trout, kokaneee salmon (blueback), ling (burbot), whitefish and kamloops (a strain of rainbow trout). The lake has a maximum depth of 370 feet and is 90 miles long. A valid Montana fishing license is required to fish any Montana waters.
